Animatronic Apatosaurus for Sale

A long-neck dinosaur is the piece that makes a park look like a park from a distance. It is also the build where the engineering stops being about the animal and becomes about the neck: a 16-metre Apatosaurus has roughly six metres of reach above the shoulder, and every metre of that reach is a lever working against the shoulder joint.

The Neck Is a Lever, Not a Tube

Every metre of neck multiplies the load at the shoulder. That is why the neck drive on a 16-metre build is a different specification from the one on a 6-metre build, and why the neck is limited in how far it can sweep. A long-neck animal that swings its head through a wide arc reads as a machine, and the frame pays for it.

The motion that works is slow and small: a head turn measured in tens of degrees over several seconds, a gentle neck rise, and a jaw that opens on a slow cycle. At this scale, restrained motion reads as a living animal; anything faster reads as an amusement ride.

The neck is a lever: every metre of reach adds load at the shoulder.

The Tail Is a Third Leg

On the fossil mounts the tail is understood to have carried part of the animal’s weight. On a build, the tail is a cantilever, and a 16-metre animal with a heavy tail needs either a counterweight forward of the hips or a tail that is deliberately lighter than the head end.

We build the tail lighter and let the base carry the balance. That is why a long-neck build cannot simply be picked up and moved — the base is part of the machine, not a stand underneath it.

Sizes and Where They Go

Six metres is the indoor build for museum halls and shopping centres. Ten to sixteen metres is the outdoor park build, where the animal is meant to be seen from a hundred metres away. Above twenty metres the transport and assembly logistics change category: the sections get longer than a standard trailer and the site needs a crane plan.

If you are considering anything above 16 metres, send the site access first. The animal can be built at any length; getting it through the gate is the constraint.

Questions Before Ordering

How long does assembly take? On a 16-metre build, two to three days with a small crew and lifting equipment. The sections ship numbered.

Can the neck reach down? Yes, on the larger builds, within the servo range. A neck that reaches to visitor height is a popular configuration for a trail exhibit.

Does it need a foundation? Yes. The anchor layout and load figures are supplied; the slab is designed and built locally.

What is the delivered weight? It scales with length and drive specification. Send the length you want and we return the figure with the drawing.

Power and Site Preparation

The drive is low-voltage DC servo, 220 W to 800 W typical, so the electrical load is not the problem. What matters is the supply position: on a 16-metre animal the control cabinet lives at the base, and the cable runs to the base rather than following the animal.

The site requirement is a level hard standing for the base plus drainage. A long-neck animal stands in one position for years, and the base is where water does its damage.

What Commissioning Looks Like

The sections are assembled and the neck is run through its full range before the animal is dressed. Then the motion is tuned: neck sweep reduced until it reads as slow, jaw cycle slowed, and the breathing setting adjusted so the body does not visibly pulse.

On a long-neck build the tuning is what separates a good install from a strange one. The animal is large enough that any motion at the wrong speed is immediately obvious from a distance — and from a distance is exactly where visitors see it first.
