Animatronic Spinosaurus Model with Sail

A Spinosaurus is a silhouette before it is an animal, and the sail is the reason. The tall ridge running down the back is the single feature that separates this build from every other large theropod on a park lawn, and it is also the hardest part to get right: a flat, thin fin reads as a cut-out, while a correctly shaped sail reads as bone and membrane.

The sail profile, the skull and the body are proportioned against a stated overall size, and the model is built for outdoor placement on a frame specified for the site. Spinosaurus builds are commonly ordered for museum display and for themed zones where a distinctive silhouette is wanted at distance.

The Sail Carries the Read

The sail is a full membrane rising from the shoulder region and tapering along the back, built with a curved cross-section and a scalloped edge. The gradient across it — a warm tone at the base moving into cooler tones above — is what gives it depth; a single flat colour makes the sail read as a painted board no matter how well it is shaped.

The skull is long and narrow with a raised crest, and it is set on a neck that carries the sail line forward. Getting the crest, the snout and the shoulder position right together is what makes the animal read as a Spinosaurus from an angle rather than only from the side, and the model is built to be walked around.

Built to Stand Outside

This is a park animal and the specification reflects that: hot-dip galvanised steel frame, anti-UV composite silicone skin over elastic fibre mesh, and servo drives rated to IP65. The sail is reinforced internally so it holds its shape through wind and through a hot summer without warping.

Colour is applied in multiple gradient layers under a UV topcoat, and the finish is what keeps the sail from fading unevenly across its height — an area that shows every sun-fade difference as a visible band. The eyes are LED units behind sculpted eyeballs, and the jaw opens with individually fitted teeth.

Where a Sail-Backed Animal Works

Museum grounds and educational displays, dinosaur trails, themed zones, mall atriums and public squares. A Spinosaurus is unusually recognisable even for visitors who cannot name it, which makes it a strong landmark for a park and a strong subject for a museum. It also photographs well in profile, which is the view the sail is built for.

Questions Before Ordering

What sizes can be built? Anything from 1 m to 30 m long and up to 15 m tall. The size is set by the site, the sight lines and the transport route, not by a fixed catalogue.

How is it triggered? Four ways: infrared or radar sensing, a pre-programmed sequence set before dispatch, handheld remote, or voice interaction. Most sites run the sensor as the default and keep the remote for staff.

What does it need on site? A 110 V or 220 V supply and a solid fixing point. The unit arrives in modules and bolts together — no on-site welding.

Can it run outdoors? Yes. The standard specification is an outdoor one, with anti-UV silicone skin, a water-resistant servo drive rated to IP65, and a hot-dip galvanised frame that tolerates salt spray.

How is it fixed? Four options: concrete foundation with pre-embedded anchor bolts, a weighted base that can be moved as one piece, expansion bolts on a hard indoor floor, or a sealed and buoyancy-rated base for water features.

How long does production take? Custom builds run on a lead time confirmed against the drawing. Send the requirement and the site plan, and the proposal comes back with the timing and the drawings marked up.

Materials. National-standard steel frame, first-tier servo motors, high-density foam core, composite silicone skin over elastic fibre mesh, hand-sprayed colour finish.

Delivery and Installation

The model ships in bolted modules on a reinforced timber crate, with frame sections, the sail assembly, skin panels and hardware packed and labelled. Sections bolt together on site; no on-site welding is required.

Our technician joins the first run so the jaw travel, the head movement, the breathing and the tail are set against the actual site, and the sail is checked in place for shape and alignment after transport.

The sail is a large, light component, so it is usually craned into position during installation. That is included in the delivery plan, and it is worth confirming the access route before shipment rather than on the day.
