Animatronic Parasaurolophus Model

The crest is the reason a Parasaurolophus is worth building. It is a sound instrument as much as a display — the hollow tube through the skull is what a Parasaurolophus actually used to make its calls — and it is also the feature that makes the animal recognisable from the far end of a park. This model carries a full crest, not a painted suggestion of one.

A Parasaurolophus is a group animal, and the model is often commissioned as a pair — an adult with a juvenile alongside, or a full group for a themed zone. The two are built to the same frame architecture, which keeps the movement programme and the paint reference consistent between them.

A Crest That Is Hollow

The crest is modelled as a hollow tube running back from the skull, not a solid fin. That single decision changes the read: a solid crest is a helmet, and a hollow one is an instrument. The internal channel is finished so it can be fitted with a small speaker if the site wants the animal to call, which on a park path does more for atmosphere than any amount of body movement.

The head drops and lifts on the neck, and the crest travels with it, so the silhouette changes as the animal moves. Combined with the breathing torso and the tail, the animal reads as alive from the side — which is the view a visitor walking a path actually gets.

Colour and Scale Do the Rest

The paint is applied in multiple gradient layers: a grey-green body, a paler underside and throat, and a deeper tone across the crest, so the animal holds its shape in flat daylight and under park lighting. Scale is where the effect lives, and the model is built to a stated size rather than guessed — a juvenile at the wrong size beside an adult breaks the relationship immediately.

The frame is hot-dip galvanised steel, the skin is anti-UV composite silicone over elastic fibre mesh, and the servo drive is rated to IP65. On a unit that spends its life outdoors in a park, that specification is the difference between a model that is still there in year three and one that is being patched.

The Group That Makes It Work

Family areas, themed play zones, dinosaur trails, museum grounds and mall family floors. A Parasaurolophus is one of the easiest dinosaurs to place because it is friendly in silhouette and low enough to work with children in frame. Built as an adult-and-juvenile pair or a small group, it is a strong anchor for a themed zone that needs a character rather than a threat.

Questions Before Ordering

What sizes can be built? Anything from 1 m to 30 m long and up to 15 m tall. The size is set by the site, the sight lines and the transport route, not by a fixed catalogue.

How is it triggered? Four ways: infrared or radar sensing, a pre-programmed sequence set before dispatch, handheld remote, or voice interaction. Most sites run the sensor as the default and keep the remote for staff.

What does it need on site? A 110 V or 220 V supply and a solid fixing point. The unit arrives in modules and bolts together — no on-site welding.

Can it run outdoors? Yes. The standard specification is an outdoor one, with anti-UV silicone skin, a water-resistant servo drive rated to IP65, and a hot-dip galvanised frame that tolerates salt spray.

How is it fixed? Four options: concrete foundation with pre-embedded anchor bolts, a weighted base that can be moved as one piece, expansion bolts on a hard indoor floor, or a sealed and buoyancy-rated base for water features.

How long does production take? Custom builds run on a lead time confirmed against the drawing. Send the requirement and the site plan, and the proposal comes back with the timing and the drawings marked up.

Materials. National-standard steel frame, first-tier servo motors, high-density foam core, composite silicone skin over elastic fibre mesh, hand-sprayed colour finish.

Delivery and Installation

The model ships in bolted modules on a reinforced timber crate, with frame sections, skin panels, the crest assembly and hardware packed and labelled for assembly. Sections bolt together on site and no welding is required.

Our technician joins the first run so the head movement, breathing and tail are set against the actual site. The crest is checked in place, because the internal channel and the head casting are the two parts most worth verifying on arrival.

Where a pair or a group is ordered, the paint reference is matched across every unit so the group reads as one family, and the movement programme is the same across all of them so the operator only learns one system.
