Animatronic Dinosaurs in Sicily, Italy

A 2019 animatronic dinosaur installation in Sicily — built, tested and crated in Zigong, then installed on site for a European visitor attraction.

Our first Sicilian installation shipped in 2019 and it set the template for every European order since. The site was an outdoor dinosaur trail on the island, and the constraints were logistical before they were sculptural: a short installation window, no second delivery, and import paperwork that had to be right the first time.

What the Site Actually Required

  • One delivery window. Island freight means fewer sailings and less room to correct a mistake. Every unit had to leave the factory tested rather than assembled on site.
  • Coastal conditions. Salt air and strong summer sun. Corrosion protection on the frame and a paint system rated for UV, not a generic outdoor finish.
  • European documentation. Export papers and an electrical specification written for the destination market, prepared before shipping.

What We Built

The trail is built around a long-neck sauropod, positioned so the animal reads from the walkway rather than only from the far end of the site. Base and plinth were designed to sit on bare clay, which is what the site actually had; a plinth sized for grass would have sunk or tilted within a season.

A family scene with a nest was added as a second stop, because a trail needs something at child height as well as something at gate scale. Both were produced on the same line as our park builds: welded Q235 steel, skin moulded over our silicone system (patent ZL 2022 1 0224489.5), painted in layers.

Every unit ran a full motion cycle on our floor before crating, and shipped with a numbered assembly sequence so the receiving crew could position sections without a technician standing next to them.

What Carried Over to Later Work

Three things from Sicily became standard on EU and UK orders. The first is a dated production schedule with a shipping plan attached, so the client can book installation labour against a real date. The second is a specification written for the destination market rather than a generic export default. The third is a documentation pack in the crate: installation manual, wiring diagrams, spare-parts list and maintenance schedule.

Since then the same route has carried work to the United Kingdom and further afield, which means the paperwork and crating pattern are already proven before a new client places an order.

Viewing the Trail Today

The animals are still installed. If you are planning a European trail, the closest comparison on our site is the theme park scene layout, and the dinosaur range shows the species we build at that scale.

Questions Buyers Ask

Can you handle the import paperwork? We prepare export documentation and the electrical specification for the destination market. Customs clearance stays with your freight agent, and we supply what they need.

Do you send a technician? Optional. Most European clients take the assembly sequence and a remote commissioning session; where the site wants a technician present, that is quoted with the order.

How long did the site take? The installation itself ran inside a short window because the units arrived assembled and tested. We do not publish a fixed number here, because it depends on crane access and how far each section has to travel from the drop point.
